About Dr. Donald Metz '47
Dr. Metz graduated from St. Francis Prep in 1941, attending SFC from 1941 until 1943 when he interrupted his studies to serve our country during World War II in the US Army’s 69th Infantry Division in Europe. Upon completing his tour of duty, he returned to the College in 1946 and was inducted into the Duns Scotus Society. Dr. Metz was elected President in his senior year and was also Archon of the Pi Alpha fraternity before graduated in 1947.
In 1951, he began his 30 plus years as a member of the faculty in St. Francis College’s Science Division. At the same time, Dr. Metz began his career at Brookhaven in 1954 as a chemist, and ultimately was named head of the Laboratory's Office of Educational Programs when it was formed in 1985. Dr. Metz was also the President of the Alumni Association from 1965-1966. In 1984, the centennial year of the founding of the College, Dr. Metz was recognized as one of the two most prominent alumni of the College.
